In 2009, I collaborated with teaching artist Hatuey Ramos-Fermín and students from College Now at Hostos Community College to investigate basement apartments as part of a youth education project through the Center for Urban Pedagogy (CUP). From 1990 to 2005, almost 40% of new units constructed were illegal basement apartments. Though they can be unsafe, they are an important source of affordable housing for low-income residents and recent immigrants. We created a choose-your-own adventure comic book to help basement apartment tenants understand their options when something goes wrong.
